We make films from the edge of culture and place – carried back from expeditions with broken gear and hard-won trust.

Our character-driven stories span some of Australia’s most successful feature documentaries, alongside short-form pieces made with the same care. Our films explore the human condition through encounters with the living world – often leading to initiatives beyond the screen.

Led by director Matty Hannon, Never Never is a small, trusted collective working internationally.

NEVER NEVER

noun

the far country beyond maps; a place of mythic wildness

I began my career by disappearing.

For many years I lived in a tent in wild locations, never far from the ocean. My curiosity in ecology took me to the remote rainforests of Mentawai, where I spent long stretches immersed in a different way of life.

Later, I set off on another multi-year journey into the colder parts of the planet. Along the way I became fluent in Indonesian, conversational in Spanish and Mentawai, and began honing my own visual language.

Filmmaking emerged from those years in the field. I became the director, cinematographer and subject of my debut feature film The Road to Patagonia, which went on to receive critical acclaim and become the highest-grossing documentary of the year across Australian cinemas.

Today my work sits at the intersection of expedition, culture and the natural world. Through Never Never, I collaborate with scientists, athletes, local knowledge holders, creatives and field experts to tell character-driven narratives about people and the living landscapes that shape them.

NEVER NEVER
